Everyone (Usually) Likes a Surprise

We had a superb "Wake Up the Earth" ride last Sunday. A great group of 22 riders turned out on April 22, and we had bright blue skies and warming temperatures, and the leftover patches of snow didn't do anything to diminish our "Wake Up" vibes. And the weather to start off the week is definitely following suit! Our thanks to Jim Floyd for leading, and for providing all who turned out with some fresh maple syrup to get us in sync with the change of the seasons! This Sunday's ride will start from East Vassalboro at 9:30 am as we set out in search of a China Surprise. See you Sunday!

SUNDAY, April 29th, EAST VASSALBORO
"China Surprise" - a delightful tour over the hills and dells of Vassalboro and China.
START: 9:30 AM at the Vassalboro Historical Society parking lot at 327 Main Street just north of the China Lake boat landing on Rt. 32 in East Vassalboro (not the boat landing in South China).
DISTANCE: 25 miles.
TERRAIN: moderate, with some hills and flat sections.
HIGHLIGHTS: a selection of great, scenic rural Maine roads with great views of China Lake and surroundings, with a surprise thrown in! (And there is a rumor that the Ice Cream Dairy Bar in South China is open!)
LEADER: Jeanine Libby, jjlibby13@roadrunner.com.

KVBC Rides for May

Looking ahead to May? Here are the KVBC rides planned for Bike Month! Feel free to spread the word! The weather this weekend is looking to be a lot more May-like, so don't forget the Wake Up the Earth Ride on Sunday in Augusta at the Rail Trail at 10 am! And if you are down in Portland this Sunday and you need new wheels, check out the Bike Swap run by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Otherwise, hope to see you Sunday in Augusta, and even more often in May!

Bike Earth Day!

The weather did not cooperate for last Sunday's ride, and even took a turn for the worse to start off the week - at least for those of us for whom visions of Spring involve flowers, not ice pellets. The forecast for next Sunday, on the other hand, is mostly sunny and in the 50s - to which we say, "Yes! Sign us up!" Join us this Sunday, Earth Day, in Augusta at the Rail Trail for our annual "Wake Up the Earth Ride!" We may have to get a bit creative passing through the construction in Downtown Hallowell, but we hope to make a stop at Slate's bakery and congregate in their outdoor patio. Hope you can join us!

April 22nd, Sunday - AUGUSTA
"Wake Up the Earth" - an early Spring/Earth Day ride along the Kennebec River Rail Trail through Augusta, Hallowell, and Gardiner.
START: 10:00 AM at the Augusta trail head of the rail trail - the municipal parking lot off of Water Street adjacent to the Maine State Housing Authority (353 Water St.) in the shadow of Memorial Bridge.
DISTANCE: 20+ miles
TERRAIN: flat (and we mean flat)
HIGHLIGHTS: EARTH DAY! For many of us, the first ride of the season, a pleasant run along the Kennebec River, with some great natural scenery mixed with some urban vistas, kicking off another great year of cycling. Probable stop at Slate's Bakery in Hallowell!

Sunday's Ride in Winslow Cancelled

NO RIDE TOMORROW - Sunday's ride in Winslow is cancelled.
We have been watching the weather intently and it looks like conditions will not improve from the predicted sub-freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow (or worse) so tomorrow's scheduled ride in Winslow has been cancelled. Hopefully things will improve for next Sunday's Wake up the Earth Ride in Augusta on Earth Day, April 22. Hope to see you a week from tomorrow!

On My Knees for Big G's

Winter hasn't quite decided if it is really Mud Season or not, but while it is trying to make up its mind, we have a KVBC ride planned for Sunday! We will start at the Winslow Elementary School and wend our way to Big G's for a lunch stop extraordinaire. Not sure at this writing if the weather will be conducive to bare knees or not. If it is more conducive towards hypothermia (raining and in the 40s) we may postpone at the ride leader's discretion. But let's hope Spring is just around the corner, and we'll see you Sunday!

April 15th, Sunday - WINSLOW
"Big G's and Bare Knees" - a riverside tour through Winslow, Benton, and Clinton.
START: 10:00 AM at Winslow Elementary School, 285 Benton Avenue, Winslow.
DISTANCE: 25-30 miles.
TERRAIN: moderate.
HIGHLIGHTS: an early Spring ride along the Kennebec and Sebasticook rivers. Optional lunch stop at "Big G's" in Winslow.
LEADER: Jeanine Libby, jjlibby13@roadrunner.com.
