Meandering to the Apple Shed

We definitely had summer-like weather for a splendid ride in Vassalboro & China on Sunday. Temperatures soared into the high 80s making the shady, tree-lined roads most welcome. The ride concluded with an outstanding lunch provided by our hosts, David & Laura.  Once again, we are very grateful and indebted to you both!  This Sunday we will hope for slightly cooler conditions for our first ride in June - a very pretty ride in Readfield, including a potential stop at the Apple Shed in Kents Hill.  Hope to see you then!

Sunday, June 4th - READFIELD
"The Maranacook Meander" - a lakeside tour through Readfield, Winthrop, Wayne and Kents Hill
START: 9:00 am at the Maranacook School Superintendent's parking lot, Millard Harrison Drive, off of Rt. 17 about one quarter mile north of Readfield Depot and across the street from the Readfield Town Beach.

Velo Vassilous

We had another fine ride Saturday from Chesterville. The rains held off and it was breezy enough to keep (most of) the bugs at bay.  Many thanks to John for leading and providing post-ride snacks which were much appreciated!  This coming Sunday will feature one of our club favorite tours around Vassalboro and China Lake, followed by a post-ride lunch graciously offered by the Lipmans.  Please let Laura know (contact below) if you plan to attend, and we'll see you on Sunday!

Sunday, May 28 - VASSALBORO

"Velo Vassalboro" - a scenic tour around the China Lake region

START:  9:00am at the home of David and Laura Lipman. Condo is after Natanis Golf Course on ARROWHEAD DRIVE off of Webber Pond Road heading north. (Not to be confused with Fairway Drive. Use Barrows Road on your GPS and we are the next road on the  left after that.)  Please park at the end of the road, beyond the garages in the large dirt parking lot after the condo buildings.

DISTANCE: approx. 33 miles

TERRAIN:  Moderate to Hilly

HIGHLIGHTS: Views of China Lake and Webber Pond, gentleman farms and country homes along the Neck Road. Stay afterwards for a light lunch and to socialize with fellow bikers.  Please RVSP to laura.lipman@roadrunner.com so Laura can get an idea of how many will be staying for lunch.

Not to be Bypassed

It was a great ride last Saturday around China Lake.  A fine group of 19 riders turned out in bright sunshine and good spirits, and we even found some tailwinds although we had to search for them.  Thanks again to Jeanine for another great ride!  This weekend we will shift over to Chesterville for the "Triple Bypass" (the local, homegrown one, not that one out in Colorado or wherever it is).  Hope you can join us!

Saturday, May 20 - CHESTERVILLE
"Triple Bypass" - an uplifting tour over three "hearty" climbs: Zion Hill, Cape Cod Hill, and Tower Road, in Chesterville, New Sharon, and Mount Vernon.
START: 9:00 am at 192 Hill Top Road in Chesterville; park along the side of the unpaved road.
DISTANCE: 29 miles
TERRAIN: pretty hilly, 2,200 feet of climbing
HIGHLIGHTS: some great hilltop views and fun descents

All the Lakes in China

May has arrived with some much warmer weather, and we had a fine ride on Sunday from Jay to Livermore & Canton. The combination of clouds and winds made it feel cooler than forecast at times, but by the ride's end the thermometer was at 75 degrees.  Here's hoping for similar weather for Saturday's ride around China Lake.  Hope to see you then!

Saturday, May 13 - NORTH VASSALBORO
"Round About China Lake" - a bucolic tour around China Lake through Vassalboro & China.
START: 9:00 am at the North Vassalboro Town Office, 682 Main Street, Rt. 32.
DISTANCE: 25 miles.
TERRAIN: rolling with some hills.
HIGHLIGHTS: some delightful back roads and lakeside views with hidden histories.

We had a great turnout with nice weather for our ride over the Colby Loop on Saturday. The roads were in nice shape and the group managed to stay pretty much intact, despite some of the headwinds on the return.  Many thanks to Duncan for leading us!  We have made it into May, Bike Month, and we will start things off this Sunday in Jay for a ride along the Androscoggin.  Hope you can join us!

Sunday, May 7 - JAY
"May in Jay" - a scenic river ramble up and down the Androscoggin.

DISTANCE: 27 miles with a 37-mile option
