Miles of Mills

We had a small but hardy group that turned out for the Wake Up the Earth ride in Turner on Saturday, despite the mis-forecast of overcast and drizzly conditions. Saturday, April 25 - SOUTH CHINA "Through the Mills" - a tour through Windsor and So. China to Weeks Mills and Coopers Mills. Back Road Whitefield

We had a very pleasant ride down to Bowdoinham from Gardiner on Sunday. A bit breezy, but not as hot as some of the weather lately. The route was well-marked, thanks to our leader, Joe, who also kindly provided water and snacks in Bowdoinham, and also accommodated another group who opted to ride on Saturday. Thanks, Joe, for going above and beyond! This Saturday we will close out the month of August with a very scenic rural ride starting in Whitefield, which mixes in some hard-packed gravel and an optional stop at the Sheepscot General Store. Hope to see you Saturday! Saturday, August 30 - WHITEFIELD "Whitefield Backroads" - a rural tour through the rolling hills and farms of Whitefield, Windsor, Somerville and Coopers Mills. Just Milling About

We had a very blustery ride through Turner and Leeds last Sunday. The Wind Advisory foretold gusts up to 40mph which we had no reason to question. The tail winds (when we had them) were quite remarkable, the cross winds were quite tricky, and the head winds were like pedaling through molasses. Still a very pretty day - a shout out to Patrick for giving me someone to ride with. This Sunday we will head out to Vassalboro for a ride through the mill towns of Windsor and China. See you then! Sunday, April 27 - SOUTH VASSALBORO "Through the Mills" - a tour through Windsor and So. China to Weeks Mills and Coopers Mills. START: 10:30 am at the ride leader's house at 700 Cross Hill Road, So. Vassalboro. Park in the turnout half-way up the driveway by the garage; please avoid parking on the water-saturated lawn, thank you! Additional parking available in the driveway opposite to 700 Cross Hill (across the street). DISTANCE: 26 or 30 mi. TERRAIN: somewhat hilly, roads recently paved. HIGHLIGHTS: some fine back roads through some venerable old mill villages. Possible post-ride get-together at the Sidereal Farm Brewery a half-mile north of the ride leader's house. Whitefield on Tour

Conditions were a bit damp for our ride from Liberty last Saturday, but we did see some sun and dry pavement for a few moments, and we also managed to time the worst downpour for a convenient stop at the Burkettville General Store.  Many thanks to Paul for leading, to the friendly storekeepers for shelter, and to all the folks who turned out.  This Saturday we will revisit the popular Tour de Whitefield in Amish Country.  As always, hope you can join us!

Through the Mill

We had a really nice ride on Sunday from Manchester. The weather outlook called for high winds and low wind chill conditions, but the four of us who showed up gambled that that was just an April Fools forecast. In fact, the day was much milder than expected; blustery, but with full sunshine that moderated things and made the late morning quite pleasant. The weather outlook ahead calls for even warmer conditions this weekend, so we will meet in So. Vassalboro on Saturday for a 10:30 start. Hope to see you then!

Amish Roads

The temperatures finally cooled off and gave us a beautiful summer day for our ride out of Oakland last Saturday.  A fine group of riders turned out to find lots of scenic back roads, some with new pavement, some with smooth gravel, and many with light traffic.  The ice cream stop afterwards was great, too!  Many thanks to Tammy for leading!  This Saturday will see the return of another popular ride, the Tour de Whitefield.  More great riding ahead, and we hope to see you on Saturday!

Got Amish?

We had a beautiful day last Saturday to kick off our rides in August, and we took full advantage by following a very pretty route from Richmond to Wiscasset. Our thanks to David Lipman who scoped out the route, and to all who helped out. This Saturday we will explore a new route on the Tour de Whitefield, another popular ride. We will start this year at the Whitefield Elementary School to take advantage of a larger parking area in which to spread out at the start. Please remember to bring a mask for use when in close proximity with others, maintain a healthy distance otherwise, and please stay home if you are feeling sick.  Take care, and see you Saturday!

105 on 105

The first KVBC Century Ride will be held this Saturday, August 6, in Augusta.  There will be options of 25, 50, 62, and 96 miles.  The Century will follow Route 105 its entire distance from Augusta to Camden and back (with options to tack on some additional miles to make an even 100 or 105 miles).  This is a self-supported out-and-back tour, over very quiet, scenic back roads - there is one traffic light on the entire route.  There are four general stores spread out about ten miles apart over the course.  The current weather forecast for Saturday is for sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s - we will be starting the Century and Metric Century rides at 8 am to take advantage of cooler morning temperatures; the other rides will start at 9 am, although you are free to start earlier (or later) if desired.  Be advised that Route 105 is hilly and can be narrow and winding at times - you should only attempt to ride a distance that you are confident of completing, unless you have arranged to have someone meet you and shuttle you back to the start.  Helmets and signed waivers are required.  Please let the ride leader know in advance if you don't plan to return to the start.  If you have any questions, please call Jim Merrick at 207-293-3784 (but not after 9 pm on Friday) or email at hjmerrick@gmail.com.  Hope to see you Saturday!
Saturday, August 6 - AUGUSTA
"105 on 105" - a Century ride from Augusta to Camden and return.

Sculptures on the Back 40

May is Bike Month, and we got off to a fine start last Saturday in Livermore, led by John Lanoue (thanks John!). We had great weather - and there's more in store for this week, they say. Hopefully it will last right into the weekend when we have another great ride planned for Saturday in Windsor. One of the highlights of the Windsor ride is a stop at the "Iron Horse" to view the sculpture gardens of Roger Majorowitz, who passed away late last year at age 83 - his massive steel sculptures are definitely worth a visit while they still stand in his open field. Hope to see you Saturday!

We had a really fine ride in Vassalboro last Saturday, followed by a wonderful post-ride lunch and get-together presented by our gracious hosts, David and Laura Lipman.  Our thanks to the Lipmans for the ride and their hospitality!  If today was any indication, the weather in June has taken quite an upswing, just in time for Leanne Moll's "Tour of the Back 40" in Windsor this Saturday.  Please note that we will be meeting at the Windsor Elementary School, about a half-mile north of the advertised ride start at the Windsor Fairgrounds, where they are hosting the Fibre Frolic this weekend (worth a visit if you have the time).  Hope you can take advantage of the great riding weather!

A stop along the Sheepscot River
We had another fine ride on Saturday in Winthrop and Monmouth, with 15 riders taking part.  It was cool, but sunny, and we weren't plagued with black flies when we stopped and regrouped.  Many thanks to Denise, who treated us to a great route and a great batch of "healthy" cookies at the ride's end.  We'll take "healthy" cookies like those any day!  This Saturday's ride will return to Windsor for a "Tour of the Back Forty."  Just the thing to kick off the long weekend.  Hope to see you then!

It is May 1st, the start of National Bike Month, and we have been having exceptional early Spring weather. Last Saturday we had a fine ride in Wayne, thanks to Ray Giglio and the dozen other riders who took part!

This week's ride will fall on Sunday, May 5 - "Cinco de Mayo" and will feature a post-ride potluck at the ride leaders house in Windsor for all those who are interested.  Bud says to bring what you like - it need not be Mexican (e.g.: the French were also involved in the turmoil at the Cinco de Mayo, although on the losing end this once).  Mexican or French or whatever, we hope to see you at the Windsor Fairgrounds on Sunday!
