A Dish or A Cone?

We had a great turnout for the KVBC Independence Ride from Sidney last Sunday.  It was a bit hot and humid, and we had some road construction to contend with, but that didn't seem to slow down the group setting a fast pace!  This week's ride will feature another great ride with an optional ice cream stop in Oakland, should the summer heat carry through to next Saturday. Hope you can join us!

Dreaming of Ice Cream

We had a nice ride over the back roads of Whitefield on Saturday.  The potential rains forecast dwindled down to some light spotty drizzle, and we had plenty of dry pavement (and even a little gravel), and a great stop at the Sheepscot General Store.  There were 8 of us at the start, including several newcomers who were very welcome!  Many thanks to Holly for revising the route and leading us.  This Saturday KVBC riders will be faced with many decisions: a cone or a dish?; soft serve or hard serve?; jimmies or sprinkles? (On second thought, forget about the sprinkles.)  Hope to see you Saturday!

Odysseys around Cobbossee

We had a very pretty ride last Saturday from Chesterville along some scenic back roads, some good climbs and exhilarating downhills, and special post-ride and mid-ride stops thanks to our gracious hosts at the ride leader's house on Parker Pond. Many thanks to John and his crew who kept us moving to avoid being dined on ourselves by an armada of insects. This Sunday we will meet in Manchester near Fielders' Choice Ice Cream for one of our traditional rides around Lake Cobbosseecontee. This will be our first ride with the new Maine CDC guidelines in place, so fully vaccinated people (not partially vaccinated or unvaccinated) can carry on outdoors without masks. You will still need a mask to go indoors in many places, and it might be prudent to have a mask while waiting in line for ice cream, so use your best judgement. Hope to see you Sunday, and if not, have a great Memorial Day! Sunday, May 30th - MANCHESTER "A Cobbossee Odyssey": a tour around Cobbosseecontee Lake. START: 9:00 A.M., at the parking lot on McArdle Street, just off Rt. 202W past the junction of Rt. 202 & Rt.17, between the Manchester Grange Hall and Fielders' Choice Ice Cream Stand. The parking lot is the first right after you turn on McArdle Street. DISTANCE: 28.8 miles. TERRAIN: rolling with some challenging hills. HIGHLIGHTS: views of Cobbossee Lake, back roads of Winthrop, Manchester, West Gardiner, Litchfield, and Monmouth, and a potential ice cream stop conveniently at the end! Cobbossee, My Odyssey

We had another fine outing on the Fourth of July in Sidney, courtesy of Jim Putnam.  It started off cloudy and mercifully cooler than it has been of late, but cleared up and warmed up by the ride's end.  Many thanks to Jim and the 20 or so riders who turned out on the holiday. This Saturday we will revisit another classic club ride around Lake Cobbosseecontee, with an optional ice cream stop at the end. Please remember that we are following pandemic protocols: please bring a mask with you to wear when you are in close proximity with others, maintain a healthy distance between riders, and please stay home if you are feeling unwell. Join us if you can!

Odysseys Are Fun

We had a nice, dry ride last Sunday in Vassalboro - remarkably so, considering the forecast. We saw an abundance of alewives, both the scaly, piscine kind, and the chewy, gummy kind. Our thanks to Tammy for leading and to Jeanine for organizing, and to the dozen cyclists for riding. Next Saturday we venture out on another odyssey around Lake Cobbossee, starting and strategically ending right beside Fielder's Choice Ice Cream in Manchester. Definitely worth checking out - see you Saturday!

Wayward Wayne

We have had some beautiful late-Summer weather of late, and we had a fine ride from Livermore last Sunday. I was especially fortunate, as everyone patiently awaited my late arrival, with nary a mention of my rule of arriving at least 15 minutes before the scheduled ride start. And even then we were just a bit early at the apple orchard, arriving just before it opened. Our thanks to John for leading, and to Missy for kindly driving the apple shuttle back to the start. Next Sunday's ride will explore more of our western frontier starting in Wayne.  Hope you can join us!

Cundy's on Sundaes

Last Saturday Steve Robe took us on a fun ride going counterclockwise (for a change) around China Lake.  Had to dodge a few raindrops at the start, but the sun came out and it did warm up to the point that it seemed like summer-like weather will soon be here (for a change). A Mother's Day Meander

May and Bike Month are upon us, and while it has been a challenge to avoid the raindrops, we did manage to get in a great ride in Skowhegan last Sunday. This Sunday is Mother's Day and we will meet at the Maranacook School Superintendent's Office (well, his parking lot, anyway) in Readfield for a 27-mile ride. Please note that this ride has been moved up a week from the original KVBC Ride Calendar listing, and that we will be biking with the alewives in Vassalboro the following Sunday. Meanwhile we will hope for less rain and even fewer blackflies, and another great group of people on Sunday in Readfield! See you then!

We had a fine ride down the Pemaquid Peninsula on Saturday, despite some wet weather to start the ride off. Many thanks to David Lipman for leading, and for the undeterred folks who braved the weather and turned out. The rains returned in force on Sunday, washing out the 2nd ride planned for the weekend, but we were grateful to David for getting one of the rides in. This Saturday we will venture north to Norridgewock for a tour through Somerset County followed by an ice cream social at the ride leaders' house! Please join us!

Celebrating Charles E. Pratt in Vassalboro

Charles Eadward Pratt, a cycling pioneer said to be the Father of American Cycling, was born in Vassalboro, Maine, March 13, 1845. Pratt organized one of the earliest bicycling rallies, a two-day group invitational ride around Boston in the Fall of 1879, called the "Wheel Around the Hub." The ride was written up (by Pratt himself) in the Feb. 1880 issue of Scribner's magazine, illustrated by a number of detailed drawings, including the one above featuring all the cyclists who took part. Chas. E. Pratt is shown as the first cyclist on the right,
Are you already tired of early Mud Season?  With sunny forecasts and temperatures in the mid-50s, time for another special KVBC pre-season ride!  This weekend marks the birthday of cycling pioneer Charles E. Pratt, first president of the League of American Wheelmen, born in Vassalboro, March 13, 1845.  To celebrate, lets have a ride in Vassalboro this Saturday! (Which is the 12th, I know, but I'd want to factor in a stop at the Green Bean Coffee Shop, as well as opening day at Back's Dairy Bar, both nearby in So. China Village.  I think old Chas. E. would approve.)  See you then!

Dig out that sunscreen!  (If you can remember where you put it.)  The sun finally showed up for our Fourth-of-July ride, and we had a great turnout and a great ride.  Many thanks to Jim Putnam for offering to lead the ride twice in five days, and kudos to everyone who did it twice!  This Saturday will feature a classic ride from Winthrop to Monmouth from the shores of Lake Maranacook.  If the temperatures soar, we can beat the heat with a dip in the lake or a double dip cone - or maybe both!  We'll see you then!
