To See the Cobbossee

Despite some questionable weather we managed to get in a club ride from Richmond to Wiscasset on Saturday. In amidst sun and clouds we had considerable wind, a few sprinkles and some drizzle, but for the most part the roads were dry, the prospect of rain never materialized, and we had a nice stop at Treats in Wiscasset. Thanks to David for putting the ride together, and to everyone, including some newcomers, for turning out! Summer has officially arrived, and we will kick it off this weekend in Manchester for one of our popular routes around Cobbosseecontee Lake and a possible ice cream stop at the end. We had an exceptionally beautiful day for our ride in Vassalboro last Sunday.  The routes were wonderful, the weather was superb, and the post-ride repast was, as always, first rate!  Many thanks to our leaders and hosts, David & Laura!  The Lipmans have also stepped up to lead this Saturday's Women's Ride on the Kennebec River Rail Trail from Augusta to Gardiner, part of BCM's Women's Ride series, the Augusta offering co-sponsored by the KVBC. Gardiner Ride DELAYED START at NOON

Due to the forecast of rain for tomorrow, we have shorted the planned route and are rescheduling for a delayed start at noon, hoping that we can get a ride in between showers. If it is pouring at noon the ride will be cancelled. Otherwise, see you tomorrow! Odysseys around Cobbossee

We had a very pretty ride last Saturday from Chesterville along some scenic back roads, some good climbs and exhilarating downhills, and special post-ride and mid-ride stops thanks to our gracious hosts at the ride leader's house on Parker Pond. Many thanks to John and his crew who kept us moving to avoid being dined on ourselves by an armada of insects. This Sunday we will meet in Manchester near Fielders' Choice Ice Cream for one of our traditional rides around Lake Cobbosseecontee. This will be our first ride with the new Maine CDC guidelines in place, so fully vaccinated people (not partially vaccinated or unvaccinated) can carry on outdoors without masks. You will still need a mask to go indoors in many places, and it might be prudent to have a mask while waiting in line for ice cream, so use your best judgement. Cobbossee, My Odyssey

We had another fine outing on the Fourth of July in Sidney, courtesy of Jim Putnam.  It started off cloudy and mercifully cooler than it has been of late, but cleared up and warmed up by the ride's end.  Many thanks to Jim and the 20 or so riders who turned out on the holiday. This Saturday we will revisit another classic club ride around Lake Cobbosseecontee, with an optional ice cream stop at the end. Please remember that we are following pandemic protocols: please bring a mask with you to wear when you are in close proximity with others, maintain a healthy distance between riders, and please stay home if you are feeling unwell. Leap Into It

Hey, Look!  A ride announcement?  Yes, it's 2020, a Leap Year, which means we get an extra day to ride bikes!  Leap Day also falls on a Saturday, which has to be good luck - and good luck will come in handy, because it's also February, when weather, temperatures, and road conditions might make things (d)icey.  The ride itself is 23 miles, but might be shortened or canceled depending on conditions - stay tuned for last-minute updates.  Last Leap Day we had a nice mild day with a great turnout, considering that it fell on a Monday.  Let's hope for more of the same on Saturday!  See you then!

Properly Pedal Pedal Properties

Sanka de Mayo

We had a wonderful "Wake Up the Earth Ride" out of Belgrade on Sunday - thanks to Jim Floyd, who set out a splendid new route for us. Now we will head into May - May is "Bike Month" - and the weather had better start to look like May. Sunday is Sanka de Mayo, but you don't have to settle for any decaffeinated ride - we are going to head out over a classic route around Gardiner and West Gardiner - and we may even stop at Frosty's Donuts near the ride's end. Kennebec Valley Bicycle Club rides are open to members and to the cycling public.  Helmets are required of all riders at KVBC events.  It is also recommended that you bring with you on KVBC rides:  a map of the area in case you stray off route; tools for simple roadside repairs, especially a tire pump, spare tube and/or patch kit; water bottles or hydration systems; personal ID and a small first aid kit; and money for purchasing snacks & drinks en-route.  In case of severe weather, scheduled rides may be postponed or designated as "show & go" rides at the discretion of the ride leader.

Back to Purgatory

Last Saturday's ride in Livermore brought us some great roads, fresh apples, and fine company - hard to top! Many thanks to John for leading, and a special note of thanks to Missy for driving the "apple shuttle" to carry apples from the orchard back to the start. This Saturday we will return to Litchfield after a too-long hiatus, to rediscover another beautiful ride past the Litchfield Fairgrounds and through Purgatory itself (if that's what it takes to get to the Black Crow Bakery). Odysseys Are Fun

We had a nice, dry ride last Sunday in Vassalboro - remarkably so, considering the forecast. We saw an abundance of alewives, both the scaly, piscine kind, and the chewy, gummy kind. Over Hill and Hall-Dale

So, you know, Winter doesn't officially begin until December 21st, and it looks like the weather gods have decided to do things officially this year.  Which means we have more mild weather in store for this weekend - partly sunny and temperatures near 50 degrees - two weeks running!  Can't turn up another opportunity to ride in beautiful late-season weather.  Let's meet Saturday morning in Hallowell at the Hall-Dale Elementary School for a 23-mile ride to Slate's Bakery - a possible preview of the Leap Day Ride next Feb. 29.  Think it'll be 50 degrees in February?  At this rate, you never know, but we'll take advantage of it while we can.

Gardiner Field & Stream

We had another great ride from Winthrop last Saturday, welcoming some new riders and exploring some new pavement.  A smooth introduction to riding with the KVBC!  We had a fine turnout, and again some superb weather for cycling.  Hopefully it will continue this weekend when we meet in Gardiner on Saturday for another tour along the quiet back roads to the south of Augusta, the route slightly modified from the original ride description in the calendar.  You'll be slightly mollified when you see how nice it is.  Hope to see you there!

Return to Litchfield

Once again the weather gods smiled on us (or perhaps, ignored us) and we got in another ride before the rains moved in last Saturday in the Belgrade Lakes. The weather was mostly cloudy, mostly cool, and thankfully mostly dry - and all of us had fun, mostly. (The ride leader was mostly under the weather, but he managed to do most of the ride.) Somewhat damp and dreary weather ahead for Bike to Work Week, but hopefully not enough to deter the faithful. Here's hoping everything clears out for this Saturday's Tour de Litchfield - a really great ride, and one where the sun always shines. I'm counting on that. See you then!

A Memorable Memorial Day Ride

As part of our countdown to Spring, here is the first of a series of ride reports from last Summer, starting with the Memorial Day weekend ride on May 29, 2010, starting in East Winthrop at Tom's Bike Boutique on Rt.202.

We had a fine turnout, considering that the ride was scheduled at the last minute on a long holiday weekend. The weather was dry, although mostly cloudy.






It's usually a good sign when the ride leader is smiling! (Or perhaps that's the trademark of a professional dental hygienist?).














The route took us over the back roads of Winthrop and into Litchfield and Monmouth.
















We rolled past historic cemeteries and many lakes and ponds.



As customary, we often stopped to chat while we waited for others to catch up.












And once everyone had caught up, we more often than not, continued to chat.












But there were more fine roads to explore, so we were soon on our way.
