Back Road Whitefield

We had a very pleasant ride down to Bowdoinham from Gardiner on Sunday. A bit breezy, but not as hot as some of the weather lately. The route was well-marked, thanks to our leader, Joe, who also kindly provided water and snacks in Bowdoinham, and also accommodated another group who opted to ride on Saturday. Thanks, Joe, for going above and beyond! This Saturday we will close out the month of August with a very scenic rural ride starting in Whitefield, which mixes in some hard-packed gravel and an optional stop at the Sheepscot General Store. Back in Whitefield

We had splendid weather for a great ride in Wayne on Sunday.  Lots of scenic overlooks, river views, vast fields of corn, and for the more adventurous, some interesting gravel roads off the beaten path.  All topped off by a stop at Tubby's Ice Cream at the ride's end.  Many thanks again to Fritz and Susan for leading and sweeping the ride!  Please join us this Saturday on the last day of summer as we welcome the arrival of Fall on our tour around Whitefield and vicinity.  See you then!

"Whitefield Backroads" - a rural tour through the rolling hills and farms of Whitefield, Windsor, Somerville and Coopers Mills.

START: 9:00 am, at the Whitefield Elementary School, 164 Grand Army Road, Rt. 126

DISTANCE: about 28 miles.

TERRAIN: rolling hills.

HIGHLIGHTS: lots of scenic rural roads around the Sheepscot River Valley, possible sightings of local Amish families out at work, and a stop at the Sheepscot General Store.

Miles of Mills

We had another fine day for our KVBC ride from Turner on Sunday, pre-Earth Day. The roads were in great shape and traffic was minimal. While riding sweep I somehow lost track of everyone's whereabouts, but everyone got back to the start OK (I think). Our ride this Saturday will start in South Vassalboro at the ride leader's as we close out the month of April. Hope to see you Saturday!

Saturday, April 27 - SOUTH VASSALBORO

"Through the Mills" - a tour through Windsor and So. China  to Weeks Mills and Coopers Mills.

START: 10:00 am at the ride leader's house at 700 Cross Hill Road, So. Vassalboro. Park in the turnout half-way up the driveway by the garage; please avoid parking on the water-saturated lawn, thank you!

DISTANCE: 26 or 30 mi.

TERRAIN: somewhat hilly, roads recently paved.

HIGHLIGHTS: some fine back roads through some venerable old mill villages. Possible post-ride get-together at the Sidereal Farm Brewery a half-mile north of the ride leader's house.

Whitefield on Tour

Conditions were a bit damp for our ride from Liberty last Saturday, but we did see some sun and dry pavement for a few moments, and we also managed to time the worst downpour for a convenient stop at the Burkettville General Store.  Many thanks to Paul for leading, to the friendly storekeepers for shelter, and to all the folks who turned out.  This Saturday we will revisit the popular Tour de Whitefield in Amish Country.  As always, hope you can join us!

Through the Mill

 We had a really nice ride on Sunday from Manchester. The weather outlook called for high winds and low wind chill conditions, but the four of us who showed up gambled that that was just an April Fools forecast. In fact, the day was much milder than expected; blustery, but with full sunshine that moderated things and made the late morning quite pleasant. The weather outlook ahead calls for even warmer conditions this weekend, so we will meet in So. Vassalboro on Saturday for a 10:30 start. Hope to see you then!

Amish Roads

The temperatures finally cooled off and gave us a beautiful summer day for our ride out of Oakland last Saturday.  A fine group of riders turned out to find lots of scenic back roads, some with new pavement, some with smooth gravel, and many with light traffic.  The ice cream stop afterwards was great, too!  Many thanks to Tammy for leading!  This Saturday will see the return of another popular ride, the Tour de Whitefield.  More great riding ahead, and we hope to see you on Saturday!
